The VD-21 tomato is a high anthocyanin, heart shaped tomato derived as a selection from Rebel Starfighter VT-16 (a green when ripe variation of Rebel Starfighter Prime, originally bred by Russ Crowe).
VD-21 is an extraordinary, high yielding oxheart variety selected and developed in 2021 by Diana Vorozhbeeva from Russ Crowe’s Rebel Starfighter VT-16 line. Producing heavy, heart shaped fruits on vigorous vines, this variety stands out for its visual appeal and deeply savoury flavour profile.
This selection is occasionally named "Malachite Elf" , the name Malachite Elf was given to this tomato by Ludmila Kadzasova. So there is a little debate as to who is responsible for this fabulous variety, which is why I'm using both names here.
Fruit
Appearance: Striking heart shaped fruits featuring a golden green exterior base, pink red vertical striping, and dark anthocyanin splashes.
Interior: Slicing reveals a green marbled core, often with red, with smooth flesh and abundant seed gel pockets.
Flavour: Rich, earthy, and savoury with pronounced umami notes. Unlike many green when ripe tomatoes, VD-21 offers low acidity, rounded out by subtle sweetness.
Fruit Weight: Medium to large oxhearts, frequently setting heavy clusters.
Growth
Plant Type: Indeterminate oxheart vine.
Foliage: Characterised by delicate, wispy, droopy foliage typical of classic oxheart lines.
Growth & Support: Exceptionally vigorous and tall-growing. Due to the weight and density of its fruit clusters, strong staking, stringing or heavy duty cage support is essential throughout the growing season.
Yield: Outstanding productiveness, setting fruit consistently from mid to late season.
Maturity: Mid season, 120+ days from seed sowing to ripe fruit.
