Ussuri Tiger Tomato (10-15 seeds)

The Ussuri Tiger is a unique and visually striking tomato variety, believed to have originated in Russia, where it is also known as "Tigr Ussuriyskiy."

Appearance and Flavour:

  • Distinctive Colouration: The most notable feature is its colouration. The fruit's skin is typically a yellow-gold or orange-yellow base with dark stripes or splotches of anthocyanin (a pigment that turns parts of the tomato blue, purple, or black). This gives it a "tiger-striped" appearance, especially on the shoulders.

  • Shape and Size: The tomatoes are generally round and can range in size from a small slicer to a small beefsteak. The average weight is 50-90 grams, but some can grow up to 150 grams or more.

  • Flavour Profile: It has a complex and balanced taste, a tangy yet sweet flavour with fruity or even wine-like notes. The flesh is juicy and the skin is thin.

Plant Characteristics and Growing:

  • Indeterminate Growth: The Ussuri Tiger is an indeterminate variety, meaning the vines will continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the season until the first frost. These plants are known to be quite tall, typically reaching heights of 1.5 to 2 meters. Due to their vining nature and height, they will require stringing, staking, caging, or some form of support to manage their growth.

  • Mid-Season Maturity: It's considered a mid-season variety, with fruit maturing in about 110-120 days after sowing seed

  • Hardiness and Resistance: The Ussuri Tiger is known for being a hardy and productive plant showing good resistance to both early and late blight, and it can perform well in cooler temperatures.

  • Growing Conditions: Like most tomatoes, it thrives in a sunny, sheltered spot with at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. It prefers nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. Consistent watering and regular feeding are recommended for optimal growth and production.

Uses:

  • Due to its vibrant and unusual appearance, it's an excellent choice for fresh salads, sandwiches, and gourmet platters where you want a visually appealing tomato.

  • Its firm, juicy flesh also makes it suitable for slicing and use in sauces and salsas.
