Sylvana's Plum Tomato (10-15 seeds)
In 2018, Karen Hollingshead of Caledon, Canada was contacted by her local seed library to grow some seeds that had been donated to enable wider sharing. The seeds were donated by the granddaughter of an Italian gardener named Sylvana. Sylvana had grown these sublime plum/paste tomatoes in her Niagara On The Lake every year and her grand daughter wanted to share them with other gardeners. Karen grew them that year and named the variety Sylvana's Plum, subsequently sharing the seeds with both the Caledon Seed Library and the Instagram tomato community (which is where I obtained the seed from Steve Newland).
Fruit Appearance:
Colour: The most striking feature is its colour. It's primarily a vibrant red/orange.
Size & Shape: Plum in shape around 10-15cm in length - these are not small fruits!
Taste Profile:
Well-balanced flavour of sweetness and acidity which lends itself not only to paste uses but also to fresh eating
Growth Habit:
Indeterminate: 'Sylvana's Plum' is an indeterminate variety. This means the plant will continue to grow, flower, and produce fruit throughout the entire growing season until frost kills it.
Vigorous Growth: Plants can be quite vigorous, with the potential to reach 2 meters
Regular Leaf: It has standard, or "regular," tomato foliage
Maturity: It's considered a mid-season tomato, with fruits typically maturing in 110-130 days from sowing
It's a rewarding choice for gardeners looking for a unique, plum/paste tomato
