Sofia's Golden Apple (Золотое яблоко Софии / Zolote Yabluko Sofii) is a vibrant, open pollinated (future heirloom) variety, bred, selected, and stabilised by renowned Russian breeder Sofia Saakova (Stavropol, Russia). Highly sought-after by tomato collectors for its striking appearance, dense apple like structure, and exceptional sweetness, this variety showcases Saakova’s signature focus on intense flavour and anthocyanin expression.
Breeder & Origin: Sofia Saakova, Stavropol region, Russia
Parentage: A direct selection and stabilised line isolated from a segregation/natural cross of Pomme d'Or de St. Jean de Beauregard (a French anthocyanin variety bred by Bruno Fournier). Saakova selected and stabilised this specific golden orange, purple shouldered variant from that population into the variety now known as Sofia's Golden Apple
Fruit Shape: Round to slightly oblate/flattened, distinctly resembling a smooth, juicy apple in shape
Fruit Weight: 120g to 300g
Skin Colour: Golden yellow to fiery orange/red base crowned with rich indigo/purple anthocyanin shoulders where exposed to sunlight
Flesh & Taste: Dense, jelly like, multi locular cross section that holds its shape without leaking. Exceptionally sweet and aromatic, blending initial warm spicy notes with a complex fruity sweetness and balanced acidity
Plant Habit: Indeterminate (vining), requires stringing, staking or caging
Plant Height: ~1.5m to 1.8m
Foliage Type: Regular leaf, dense, dark green foliage.
Maturity: Mid to late season, around 125 days from seed sowing to ripe fruit
