Sofia's Ginger Comet Tomato
Bred and selected by celebrated Russian tomato breeder Sofia Saakova (Stavropol, Russia), Sofia's Ginger Comet (Имбирная Комета Софии / Ginger Comet Sofia / Ginger Comet) is a striking, highly ornamental heart shaped open pollinated (future heirloom) variety. Celebrated for its bold "psychedelic" bi-colour pattern and fruity first flavour profile, it combines heavy productivity with dense, dessert-like flesh reminiscent of tropical fruits.
Breeder & Origin: Sofia Saakova (Stavropol, Russia)
Parentage & Lineage: Part of Saakova's famous "Comet" (Комета) breeding series, which includes Sofia's Fiery Comet and Sofia's Emerald Comet. It is a recently stabilised selection developed from Saakova's authorial bi-colour and anthocyanin cross lines, retaining strong oxheart characteristics, intense antho striping, and tropical flavour traits
Fruit Shape: Elegant, slightly flattened heart / oxheart shape with smooth contours and occasional subtle ribbed shoulders
Fruit Weight: 150g to 400g, with larger specimens reaching up to 500g
Skin Colour: A fiery ochre orange to golden base covered in rich crimson pink blush, accented by dark indigo black anthocyanin shoulders and streaks where exposed to sunlight
Flesh & Taste: Dense, thick walled, bicoloured orange flesh marbled with red streaks and very few seeds. Offers a rich, dessert like, tropical flavour profile (think mango or peach) with deep sweetness, a silky melting texture, and balanced, low acidity
Plant Habit: Indeterminate (vining), grows well both undercover and outdoors
Foliage Type: Regular leaf, wispy and slender open habit typical of classic oxheart lines
Plant Height: 1.5m to 1.8m
Maturity: Mid season, around 120 days from seed sowing to ripe fruit
Yield & Habit: Highly productive; sets trusses of 4 to 6 large fruits continuously throughout the summer. Requires sturdy staking, stringing or caging and support to handle the heavy weight of the fruit clusters.
