Shadow Boxing Tomato (10-15 seeds)
The "Shadow Boxing" tomato is an eye-catching and relatively new variety developed by the well-known breeder Tom Wagner of USA. It's particularly appreciated for its unique, multi-coloured fruit and robust plant.
Appearance: This is arguably the most striking feature of the Shadow Boxing tomato. The fruits are round and slightly elongated, often ending in a point. (Note there are other variations of Shadow Boxing which are more elongated in shape). They are multi-coloured, with the side exposed to the sun developing a deep, almost black, purple-blue colour from anthocyanin, while the shaded side ripens to an orange-red. The contrast is dramatic and makes the fruit look like it has been "shadowed."
Flavour: The taste is well-balanced, with a good mix of sweetness and acidity - Juicy, and tangy with a rich flavour that is spicy with a sharp twist.
Plant Type: Shadow Boxing is typically a dwarf variety, growing to a height of around 90-120 cm. This compact habit makes it suitable for container gardening and smaller spaces. However, it is an indeterminate variety, meaning it will continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the season until the first frost, unlike many other compact varieties that are determinate.
Fruit Size: The tomatoes are small to medium-sized, generally weighing between 50-150 grams.
Productivity: It's a productive variety, yielding a generous amount of fruit.
Maturity: This is a mid-season tomato, with fruits typically ripening in around 125 days from seed sowing.
Stability: As a newer variety, some sources note that it can be a bit variable in its fruit shape, with some plants producing more ovoid fruits and others more elongated ones, all with a small point or nipple. These are the rounded ovoid variation.
Growing Tips:
Sunlight: Full sun is essential for this variety, as the development of its striking purple-blue colour is dependent on sun exposure.
Support: Although it's a dwarf variety, its heavy fruit set means it can get top-heavy. It will benefit from some support, such as stringing, a sturdy stake or a small cage, to keep the branches from breaking or falling over.
Watering: Like all tomatoes, it needs consistent watering to prevent problems like blossom end rot and fruit splitting.
Uses: Due to its manageable size and excellent flavour, it's perfect for fresh eating, salads, or adding a unique splash of colour to any dish. It's a great choice for home gardeners who want a beautiful and delicious tomato that stands out.
