Royal Purple Tomato (10-15 seeds)
The Royal Purple tomato is a relatively new and exciting variety known for its large size, striking colour, and rich flavour. It was developed by breeder Lee Goodwin in New Mexico and is a cross involving the well-known heirloom variety 'Cherokee Purple'
Appearance: The fruits are a large, beefsteak type, often weighing over 200g. They have a unique deep purple with dark green veins near the stem end, which gives them a crown-like appearance, a fitting characteristic for their "royal" name. The flesh inside is a deep, dark red, which is a striking contrast to the skin.
Flavour: Royal Purple has an excellent, rich, and complex flavour. It has the deep, earthy, and savoury taste typical of "black" tomatoes. Many find its flavour to be superior, with a good balance of sweetness and acidity that makes it great for slicing and fresh eating.
Plant Type: This is an indeterminate variety, meaning the plants will continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the season until the first frost. The plants are vigorous and productive, reaching a height of around 2 meters.
Productivity: Generous and consistent production from mid-season until the end of the growing season.
Maturity: Royal Purple is a mid-season tomato, typically maturing in 125-135 days from seed sowing.
Origins: As a cross with 'Cherokee Purple', it inherits some of that variety's desirable traits, including its complex flavor anud beautiful colour, whilst being more productive and vigorous
Growing Tips:
Sunlight: Like all tomatoes, Royal Purple needs at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day to grow well and develop its best colour and flavour.
Support: Due to its vigorous growth and large fruit size, a strong support system like a stringing, staking, sturdy cage or a trellis is essential to keep the vines from collapsing under the weight of the fruit.
Watering: Consistent watering is crucial to prevent common tomato problems like blossom end rot and cracking.
Fertilisation: Providing the plants with rich, well-draining soil and a balanced fertiliser will help support their productive nature.
The Royal Purple tomato is a great choice for gardeners looking for a visually stunning, high-yielding, and delicious tomato that stands out in the garden and on the plate.
