Riddle of the Strawberry Waterfall Tomato

'Riddle of the Strawberry Waterfall' (originally released in Russian as Zagadka Klubnichnogo Vodopada / Загадка клубничного водопада) — also sold under the names Mystery of the Strawberry Waterfall or Strawberry Waterfall Mystery. A rare Sofia Saakova addition, indeterminate plants producing anthocyanin splashed elongated plum shaped fruit with superb flavour.

Origin & Breeder

  • Breeder: Bred by prominent Russian tomato breeder Sofia Saakova in Stavropol, Russia.

  • Type: Rare open-pollinated / future heirloom variety. As a relatively recent release, slight variations in striping or fruit size may occasionally appear.

Key Characteristics

  • Shape: Elongated plum with a distinct pointed tip.

  • Size: Medium-sized fruits weighing between 50–120 grams.

  • Colouration: High anthocyanin appearance. The fruits mature to a deep raspberry/burgundy or pinkish red base etched with golden yellow strokes and heavy indigo/purple splashing where sunlight touches the skin.

  • Growth Style: Fruits hang in generous, cascading clusters of 6 to 10 tomatoes per branch.

  • Flavour: Exceptionally sweet and rich with complex fruity notes, balanced by a slight, refreshing tartness.

  • Texture: Dense, meaty interior with juicy flesh and few seed cavities.

Growing Information

  • Plant Type: Indeterminate (requires strong trellis, stringing or staking).

  • Foliage: Regular leaf.

  • Days to Maturity: Mid-early to mid-season, seed sow to ripe fruit around 110 days.

  • Height: Typically reaches 1.8m in height.

  • Pruning Recommendation: Performs best when pruned to 2–4 main leads. Full sunlight exposure on the clusters enhances the deep dark purple (anthocyanin) colouration.
