Purple Boy Micro Dwarf Tomato (10-15 seeds)

The Purple Boy Micro Dwarf Tomato is a distinctive and highly sought-after variety among small-space gardeners, primarily noted for its compact size and attractive anthocyanin (purple/black) colouration

It's important to note that there are two different varieties with a similar name: the large, indeterminate 'Purple Boy Hybrid F1' (a beefsteak type) and this micro dwarf variety, the much smaller 'Purple Boy Micro Dwarf'.

Plant and Growth Characteristics

  • Plant Type: Micro Dwarf, Determinate (Bush Type)

    • It has a compact and sturdy, bushy growth habit.

    • As a determinate variety, it grows to a fixed size and requires little to little or no staking (maybe a couple of very small canes) or pruning of sideshoots.

  • Size: Very compact.

    • It typically reaches a height of around 25 cm. It can be slightly smaller or taller depending on pot size.

  • Leaves: Regular leaf type, often with a dark anthocyanin blush (purplish colour) on the foliage in cool, bright conditions.

  • Time to Harvest: Early to Mid-Season, generally ready in about 100 days from seed sowing.

Fruit Characteristics

  • Type: Cherry Tomato (sometimes described as a "Large Cherry Tomato" for a micro dwarf). The fruit is typically around 2.5cm round.

  • Colour: Striking and unique.

    • The fruits ripen from a green base with bright purple/black anthocyanin shoulders

    • The final colour is a dark red/blackened cherry with a deep purple blush on the skin areas exposed to the sun. The more direct sunlight it receives, the darker and more purple the shoulders will become. The flesh inside remains red.

  • Flavour:

    • It is often described as having a mild, sweet tomato flavour with a bit of a tart or tangy finish. Some descriptions highlight a subtle plum-like texture.

  • Productivity: Highly productive for its small size, producing a good harvest of these colourful fruits.

Growing the Purple Boy Micro Dwarf

  • Best For: Containers, windowsills, balconies, patios, and indoor growing setups. It is perfect for 2-3 litre pot, or slightly larger for maximum production.

  • Sunlight: Requires full sun (or equivalent grow lights indoors) The anthocyanin colouration is directly related to sun exposure, so maximum light will produce the darkest fruits.

  • General Care: Like all micro dwarf tomatoes, it needs consistent watering (do not let the soil dry out) and regular feeding with a balanced fertiliser, switching to a high-potash feed once fruiting begins.

Due to its relative newness in the micro dwarf community, some seed vendors note that the variety might not be fully stable yet, which can occasionally result in slight variation.
