Orange Hat Micro Dwarf Tomato (10-15 seeds)

The "Orange Hat" tomato is a popular and highly-regarded variety, particularly for gardeners with limited space. It's classified as a "micro dwarf" tomato, meaning its entire life cycle is suited for small containers.

  • Plant Size: This is the most defining feature. The plants are extremely compact micro dwarf typically growing only 15-30 cm tall. This makes them ideal for growing on windowsills, balconies, patios, or in small containers as small as a 1 litre pot.

  • Plant Type: Orange Hat is a determinate variety. This means it grows to a certain size, produces its fruit all at once, and then stops growing. This makes it a perfect "set it and forget it" plant (though it still needs care). Because of its small size, it generally doesn't require staking or cages.

  • Fruit Appearance: The fruits are small, round, cherry-sized tomatoes with a vibrant, bright orange colour when ripe. They are very prolific for the size of the plant, often covering the entire bush, giving it the appearance of "wearing an orange hat."

  • Flavour: The flavour is sweet and fruity, with a good balance of sweetness and acidity. The flesh is juicy and the skin is tender.

  • Maturity: Orange Hat is an early-maturing variety, with fruits ready to harvest in about 100 days from seed sowing. This quick turnaround is another reason it's a great choice for container gardening or for those in shorter growing seasons.

  • Origin: This variety originated in Russia, where it is known as "Oranzhevaja Shapochka," which translates to "Orange Riding Hood."

Growing Tips:

  • Sowing: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost date.

  • Container Growing: Its compact nature makes it perfectly suited for pots. You can grow it in a small container on a windowsill or patio.

  • Sunlight: Like all tomatoes, it needs plenty of sun. It will thrive with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. If growing indoors, it will benefit from a sunny window or supplemental grow lights.

  • Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.

  • Pruning: As a determinate variety, it requires very little to no pruning. Simply removing any leaves that touch the soil can help with airflow and disease prevention.

The Orange Hat tomato is an excellent choice for beginner gardeners, apartment dwellers, or anyone who wants a productive and low-maintenance tomato plant that is both delicious and highly ornamental.
