Molten Lava Tomato (10-15 seeds)

The 'Molten Lava' tomato is a captivating and distinct variety, particularly known for its vibrant colours and delicious flavour. It's a great choice for adding visual interest and a sweet punch to your harvest.

  • Origin: This variety was created by Plant World Seeds in the UK, by crossing the wild, primitive Tomato peruvianum with one of the 'Indigo Black' varieties. This unique parentage contributes to its distinctive traits.

  • Appearance: This is where 'Molten Lava' truly lives up to its name. The fruits are primarily bright orange with striking red "fangs of fire" or splashes/stripes radiating from the blossom end, reminiscent of flowing lava. They also feature a black (anthocyanin) skin around the calyx (stem end), which is a common trait from its 'Indigo Black' parent. The internal flesh is typically a vibrant red/orange. As a new variety from Plant World Seeds, 'Molten Lava' is not completely stable so expect some fabulous variations.

  • Size: 'Molten Lava' produces fruits that are sizeable, plum shaped, about 3.5 to 6 cm.

  • Flavour: 'Molten Lava' has a strong, distinctive, fruity taste leaning towards acid rather than sweet, from firm fleshed fruits.

  • Growth Habit: It's an indeterminate vining tomato. This means the plant will continue to grow, flower, and produce fruit throughout the entire growing season until frost. The vines grow to a decent height, often reaching over 2m.

  • Maturity: It's an early to mid-season variety, which is a big plus, meaning you can get a great crop even in areas with shorter summers, or an earlier start in a greenhouse. Typical maturity is around 110 days from seed sowing to ripe fruit.

  • Productivity: 'Molten Lava' is  high-yielding, producing lots of fruit over a really long season. It "just keeps on going forever, long after most other plants have stopped fruiting."

Growing Tips:

  • Support: As an indeterminate vine, it will require stringing, strong staking, caging, or trellising to support its vigorous growth and abundant fruit production.

  • Sunlight: Full sun is essential for optimal growth, fruit development, and the vibrant colour expression, particularly the anthocyanin shoulders.

  • Watering: Consistent watering is important, especially during fruit set and ripening, to prevent issues like cracking.

  • Versatility: Its robust nature makes it suitable for outdoor growing in many climates, but it also performs exceptionally well in a greenhouse for even earlier crops and prolonged seasons.

'Molten Lava' is a fantastic choice for gardeners seeking a visually stunning, productive, and delicious orange-striped tomato with a unique "black" top. Its early maturity and long fruiting season make it a rewarding variety to grow.
