Midnight Select Tomato (10-15 seeds)

The "Midnight Select" tomato is a fascinating and relatively new variety that stands out for its unique coloration and robust productivity. It was developed by Lee Goodwin of J&L Gardens in New Mexico.

  • Appearance: Midnight Select has intense indigo-blue colouration, which is a result of high levels of anthocyanin, a powerful antioxidant. The small, round fruits, often described as cocktail-sized, start green and develop a deep, almost black, purple on the shoulders. The fruit will show a hint of green, which turns to gold as it ripens. The flavour is best when the fruit turns from a full indigo-blue colour to a darker black at the top.

  • Flavour: The flavour is good and full-bodied with a dense texture and a slight acidity giving a satisfying and complex taste.

  • Plant Type: This is an indeterminate variety, meaning it will continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the season. The plants are relatively compact for an indeterminate, typically only reaching reaching about 100 to 150 cm in height, making them a good option for smaller gardens or container growing.

  • Productivity: It is a heavy producer, yielding numerous clusters of small fruits. The clusters typically contain around six tomatoes, and the plant is known for its high yield.

  • Maturity: Midnight Select is a mid-season variety, with fruit typically ripening in about 120 to 130 days from seed sowing.

  • Anthocyanin: A key feature of this tomato is its high anthocyanin content.Unlike some other "antho" varieties, Midnight Select is not as dependent on direct sunlight for its colour development, which makes it a more reliable choice for producing that deep indigo hue.

Growing Tips:

  • Sunlight: While not as dependent on sun for colour as some other varieties, full sun is still recommended for the best plant growth and fruit development.

  • Soil and Watering: Like all tomatoes, it prefers well-draining, rich soil and consistent watering.

  • Support: Although a smaller indeterminate plant, it still benefits from a support system like stringing, a stake or cage to handle the heavy fruit load.

  • Uses: Due to its size, it is excellent for fresh eating, snacking, salads, and even for making sauces or as a unique addition to a bruschetta or a platter.
