Micro Tom Micro Dwarf Tomato (10-15 seeds)

The 'Micro Tom' tomato is arguably the most famous and widely recognised micro dwarf tomato variety, It's a fantastic option for anyone with limited space, or those looking to grow tomatoes indoors or in unconventional settings.

Key Characteristics:

  • Origin and Development: 'Micro Tom' was developed by the University of Florida, a result of crossing 'Florida Basket' and 'Ohio 4013-3' cultivars. It was specifically bred for its tiny size and released in 1989. It's an open-pollinated (non-hybrid) variety, meaning you can save seeds from your plants and they'll grow true to type.

  • Extremely Compact Size (Micro Dwarf): 'Micro Tom' typically grows only 15-25 cm  tall, though some might reach up to 25-30 cm in optimal conditions

  • Determinate Growth Habit: It's a bushy, determinate variety. This means:

    • It grows to a certain, genetically predetermined size and then stops

    • It produces its fruit crop all at once or over a relatively short, concentrated period

    • Crucially, it does not require pruning of side shoots

    • It generally needs no staking or support whatsoever due to its sturdy, compact nature

  • Fruit Characteristics:

    • Size: Produces very small, round cherry tomatoes, they are truly bite-size

    • Colour: Deep red when ripe

    • Taste: A sweet flavour with a good balance of tang and juice. They are firm and can be quite crunchy

    • Yield: Despite its tiny size, a single 'Micro Tom' plant can produce a surprising number of tomatoes, often around 20-40 fruits per plant

  • Early Maturity: It's a very fast-maturing variety, with fruits typically ready for harvest in 90-100 days from sowing. This makes it excellent for quick turnarounds or successive sowings.

  • Ideal for Containers and Indoors: Its tiny size makes it perfect for:

    • Windowsills: Can be grown in pots as small as 9cm, though a slightly larger pot (e.g., 1-2 litre ) might yield more fruit.

    • Small apartments, balconies, patios.

    • Hydroponic systems

    • Year-round indoor harvesting if adequate light is provided

'Micro Tom' is a truly remarkable tomato variety, demonstrating how much a plant can produce in a miniature package, making fresh, homegrown tomatoes accessible to almost anyone.
