Maja Micro Dwarf Tomato (10-15 seeds)
The Maja tomato is an old Swedish heirloom variety that has gained popularity among gardeners, especially those with limited space.
Plant and Growth:
Determinate/Bushy: Maja is a determinate tomato, meaning it grows to a specific height and then focuses its energy on producing a single, concentrated crop. This makes it a great choice for container gardening and smaller spaces like balconies and patios.
Compact Size: The plants are relatively small but would best be described as a large micro dwarf tomato, typically growing to a height of 45-80 cm
Support: Although it's a compact plant, Maja is known to be very productive. The stems can become weighed down by the fruit, so a sturdy basket or stakes are beneficial for support.
No Pruning: Unlike indeterminate varieties, Maja does not need to have its side shoots pruned. This makes it an easy-to-grow option.
Fruit and Flavour:
Size: The tomatoes are considered "salad-sized" or large cherry tomatoes, averaging about 4-5 cm in diameter.
Colour and Taste: They are a classic red colour and have an old-time "red tomato flavour" that is well-balanced with a good blend of sweetness and acidity. The flavour is often described by others as juicy and delicious. I'd describe it as 'proper tomato'.
Uses: Due to their size and classic flavour, Maja tomatoes are excellent for snacking, salads, canning, sauces, and soups.
Growing Conditions:
Sunlight: Like most tomatoes, Maja requires a location with full sun.
Containers: It is an ideal variety for growing in pots and containers. A container of at least 2-3 litres is recommended.
Planting and Harvest: Sow seeds indoors from late February to May. The plants can be moved outdoors once the risk of frost has passed. Maja is an early season tomato variety, producing ripe fruit around 120 days after seed sowing
Water and Nutrients: Maja tomatoes, especially when grown in pots, require regular watering and a consistent supply of nutrients. It's recommended to feed the plants at least every 7 days with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser (tomato food).
