Golden Hour Micro Dwarf Tomato (10-15 seeds)
The Golden Hour tomato is a speciality variety highly valued by gardeners, especially those with limited space, due to its unique characteristics as a micro dwarf tomato.
Plant and Growth Characteristics
Type: It is a Micro Dwarf tomato, also suitable for being grown on balconies or in small spaces.
Habit: It as an Indeterminate micro-dwarf, meaning it continues to grow and produce fruit throughout the season, but remains small. Some growers have reported a more Determinate (bushy, stops growing once frost sets) behaviour, suggesting that the growth habit can
Size: The plant is very compact, typically growing between 25 to 50 cm) tall.
Container Growing: It is particularly well-suited for container gardening, including pots, windowsills, and hydroponics, as it requires less space, light, and nutrients than full-sized varieties.
Production: It is an exceptionally heavy producer for its small size.
Development: It is considered an early-season variety, with a maturity time of around 90 to 100 days after seed sowing.
Origin: It was developed by Mark Seabolt from a cross between the 'Brad's Atomic Grape' tomato and a micro-mini variety, and was introduced by Wild Boar Farms in 2023.
Fruit Characteristics
Shape and Size: The tomatoes are oval or roma-shaped to bullet-shaped cherry/grape tomatoes. They are mid-sized for a cherry tomato, weighing an average of 15 to 55 grams.
Colour: The fruit is striking, starting as creamy yellow with anthocyanin (purple) stripes or shoulders, and ripening to a vibrant golden-orange with the purple/darker neck remaining.
Flavour: It is praised for its excellent, sweet, and fruity flavour with low acidity.
Texture: The fruits are meaty with some juice. They also have a tougher outer skin, which contributes to their high crack resistance and makes them a long keeper that can store for weeks at room temperature.
Uses: It is great for fresh eating, including salads, and is also reported to make a "legendary sauce."
Growing Tips
Sunlight: Thrives in full sun.
Soil: Prefers well-drained, rich, and fertile soil.
Container Care: When growing in containers, monitor the soil daily, as pots dry out faster than in-ground gardens. Feed with a balanced fertiliser every two weeks after germination, and switch to a high-potassium liquid fertiliser once the first fruits begin to swell.
Planting: For seeds, sow indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost. Transplant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.
Support: Generally, no staking or pruning of side shoots is required because of its micro dwarf, compact nature.
