Fiery Katya Tomato
Fiery Katya (Огненная Катя / Ognennaya Katya) is a fabulous tomato selection stabilised by Russian breeder Sofia Saakova.
While Saakova is famous for her "Comet" series (which feature elongated heart shapes with dramatically curved "beaks"), Fiery Katya is a distinct lineage centred around a classic Eastern European "truffle" or pleated teardrop shape combined with high anthocyanin pigmentation.
Breeder & Stability: Selected and developed by Sofia Saakova. These are F7 generation, making it very stable while retaining enough genetic plasticity that fruit weights can vary depending on growing conditions. My harvest has ended up somewhat larger and rotund.
Fruit Appearance: Produces ribbed/pleated, teardrop or "truffle shaped" fruits. Bright scarlet red skin is offset with sun activated anthocyanin shoulders.
Fruit Size: Typically ranges between 200g and 300g, though early or late season fruits may range anywhere from 100g to 500g+.
Flesh & Texture: The interior features solid, crimson flesh with very few seed cavities. Described in European seed circles as having an "oily" or buttery texture - meaning smooth, fine grained flesh with zero mealiness.
Flavour Profile: Highly aromatic, sweet, and rich with a well balanced profile.
Growth Habit: Indeterminate grower reaching about 1.7 meters. It matures mid to early with ripe fruit approximately 120 days after seed sowing.
Support: Requires staking, stringing or caging and the pruning of side shoots to manage heavy clusters.
