Fat Frog Micro Dwarf Tomato (10-15 seeds)
The 'Fat Frog' tomato is a fantastic and unique micro dwarf variety, perfect for those with limited space or a desire to grow something a bit out of the ordinary. It's truly a standout in the world of compact tomatoes being a GWR (green when ripe) variety.
Type: 'Fat Frog' is a micro dwarf tomato. This means it's an exceptionally compact plant, typically growing only 20-45 cm tall, making it ideal for small pots or windowsills.
Origin/Breeder: It's an original creation of Bunny Hop Seeds (Dr. Ellen Pong) in the USA. It's a segregant from a cross involving 'Floragold Basket' x ('ATVO 0102' x 'Green Mustang'). 'ATVO 0102' is noted for bacterial wilt and nematode resistance, as well as tolerance to hot and humid conditions, which likely contributes to 'Fat Frog's' reported heat tolerance.
Growth Habit: It has a determinate growth habit. This is key for micro dwarfs; the plant grows to a specific size, produces its fruit crop over a concentrated period, and then generally stops significant growth. This means it typically does not require staking or pruning of side shoots, making it very low-maintenance.
Foliage: It features rugose regular leaf foliage, meaning the leaves have a somewhat crinkled or wrinkled texture.
Fruit Appearance: This is one of its most distinctive features. 'Fat Frog' is a GWR (green-when-ripe) fleshed variety. The fruits are typically large cherry tomatoes (often 2-4 cm in diameter) that are green inside and out, but develop a subtle warm ochre or yellowish tinge/blush to the skin when fully ripe, indicating they are ready to pick.
Flavour: The flavour is deliciously sweet, with an additional tang in the background. The texture is succulent and juicy. Some recommend picking them just before full ripeness for that tangy kick, but note that over watering during ripening can dilute the flavours.
Maturity: It's an early-season variety, typically maturing in 100-120 days from seed sowing.
Productivity: Despite its small size, 'Fat Frog' is very productive for a micro dwarf, especially when grown in slightly larger pots (e.g. 3 litres or larger), whilst 2 litres is ordinarily adequate. Continuous production for many months, even indoors is perfectly possible.
Resilience: It exhibits very good tolerance to heat and humidity, and the parentage suggests good disease resistance, which is a bonus for a micro dwarf.
'Fat Frog' is a standout micro dwarf tomato that offers a unique green-when-ripe fruit with a delicious, sweet-and-tangy flavour. Its compact size, ease of care, and consistent productivity make it a highly recommended variety for various growing environments.
