Eye Candy Tomato (10-15 seeds)
The "Eye Candy" tomato is a unique and visually striking variety developed by Wild Boar Farms. It is an indeterminate, mid-to-late season tomato known for its incredible flavour and stunning appearance.
Appearance: The tomatoes start off green with dark green stripes and purple "anthocyanin" splashes. As they ripen, they turn a dark brick-red and pink, with the stripes becoming golden and the anthocyanin turning black. The skin is incredibly smooth and shiny, giving the tomatoes an almost artificial look.
Flavour: Eye Candy has an outstanding, rich, and complex flavour. The interior is meaty with a great balance of richness, acidity, and sweetness.
Plant Type: Eye Candy is an indeterminate dwarf variety, which means it continues to grow and produce fruit throughout the season. The plants are relatively stocky, averaging 90 to 120cm in height, making them a dwarf variety suitable for smaller spaces and container gardens. The leaves are also a beautiful, dark green, almost blue colour.
Fruit Size: The fruit is a small sized beefsteak, typically weighing between 85-170 grams.
Durability and Shelf Life: This variety is very durable and has an outstanding shelf life, reportedly lasting 2-3 weeks at room temperature without sacrificing eating quality.
Uses: Due to its exceptional flavour and beautiful appearance, it is perfect for salads, sandwiches, or simply eating fresh off the vine.
Growing Tips:
Sunlight: Like most tomatoes, Eye Candy needs full sun, with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Soil: It thrives in rich, nutrient-dense, and well-draining soil. Amending the soil with compost and other organic matter before planting is recommended.
Watering: Water consistently to keep the soil evenly moist. Avoid getting the leaves wet to prevent disease. Consistent watering is also crucial to prevent problems like fruit splitting and blossom end rot.
Support: Although a more compact indeterminate variety, it still benefits from a support system like a string, cage, stake, or trellis.
Maturity: It takes approximately 120-130 days from seed sowing to reach maturity - mid season.
Anthocyanin: The purple and black coloration comes from anthocyanin, an antioxidant. The amount of anthocyanin can vary based on temperature and sunlight, with lower temperatures and high-light conditions favouring its development.
The Eye Candy tomato is considered a sister variety to Showstopper, another creation from Wild Boar Farms' Brad Gates. Also stocked by NRTomatoseed.
