E ObsidianTomato (aka Elements Obsidian) (10-15 seeds)
The 'E Obsidian' (or 'Elements Obsidian') tomato variety is a part of a newer breeding trend focused on high anthocyanin content. Its origin is a key part of its story.
Origin:
The 'E Obsidian' tomato was bred by Tim and Lutz Unverhau at Kleverhof in Germany. They are known for their focus on biodynamic farming practices (Demeter certified) and for breeding a number of unique, open-pollinated tomato varieties. 'E Obsidian' is part of their 'Elements' series, which they created based on the idea of the four elements (Earth, Water, Air, and Heat) that are essential for a tomato's development. This variety is a selection from a cross of the 'Blue OSU' tomato with other varieties.
Plant and Growth:
Indeterminate: This is a tall, indeterminate variety that will continue to grow and produce fruit until the first frost.
Vigorous Plant: The plants are robust and high-yielding, and they will require stringing, staking or a cage to support the weight of the fruit.
Adaptable: While it thrives in a greenhouse, it is also well-suited for a sunny, protected outdoor location, such as against a south-facing wall, or in a large pot on a sunny balcony.
Fruit and Flavour:
Appearance: The fruit is truly unique, with a deep red base colour that is heavily streaked and overlaid with black or dark purple antho splashes. The intensity of the black coloration is directly related to the amount of sunlight the fruit receives. The tomatoes can also have a ribbed or flattish-round shape.
Size: They are typically medium-sized tomatoes, often weighing between 80-180 grams.
Taste: The flavour is a significant improvement on many earlier anthocyanin rich varieties. It's complex and well-balanced, with a great mix of sweetness and acidity. The flavour is definitely in the aromatic, sweet, and authentic tomato camp.
Growing Conditions:
Sunlight: Full sun is essential for both plant health and to maximise the deep, dark colouration of the fruit.
Maturity: 'E Obsidian' is a mid-season variety, with fruit typically ready for harvest in 120-130 days from seed sowing.
Health Benefits: Like other "antho" tomatoes, 'E Obsidian' is valued for its high antioxidant content.
'E Obsidian' is a fantastic and visually striking tomato from the expert breeders at Kleverhof. It combines the aesthetic appeal of a black tomato with a genuinely delicious, complex flavour, making it a great choice for both fresh eating and a conversation piece in the garden.
