Adora Tomato (10-15 seeds)

The 'Adora' tomato is a recent commercial variety from Spain, specifically bred for its unique appearance and intense flavour profile. Ordinarily a winter tomato in Spain, I've discovered that it lends itself as a summer tomato in the UK. Traditionally, green/brown in colour but if left will take on a red.

Type and Appearance

  • Variety Type: It is a new, dark-brown variety of the traditional Marmande tomato. The Marmande is a classic, ribbed beefsteak tomato. Indeterminate mid season plants with ripe fruits around 120 days from seed sowing.

  • Colour: The tomato ripens to a distinctive chocolate-brown/dark-brown colour with characteristic bright green shoulders. The colour develops progressively, and some growers suggest eating it with green tones for a tangier flavour, or waiting for the full brown hue for a fruitier taste. From my own experience, they can be left to near red for a super fruity, sweet taste.

  • Shape: It has an attractive ribbed shape, typical of the Marmande lineage.

Flavour Profile

  • Taste: The 'Adora' is commercially marketed on its superior, intense flavour and quality. It is known for achieving a perfect and harmonious balance between sweetness and acidity

  • Brix Level: It boasts a high Brix level (a measure of sugar content), which contributes to its exceptional taste.

  • Texture: It has firm flesh and a good texture.

Cultivation and Origin

  • Origin: The variety was developed by the international seed group HM Clause's Spanish arm as "the real alternative to Marmande" to fill a gap for a high-quality, flavourful ribbed tomato.

  • Growing Region: It is primarily grown in traditional Spanish tomato-producing regions, particularly on the coast of Granada and the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park in Andalusia. It also works well in rural Leicestershire!

  • Availability: Due to the climate in Spain, 'Adora' tomatoes are typically on the market from early November to late May as it is grown as a winter variety. This translates very well to growing in the UK summer climate.

Fruit Qualities

  • Shelf-Life: An essential characteristic of 'Adora' is its excellent shelf-life and its ability to ripen slowly post-harvest, which makes it ideal for keeping.

  • Recognition: The 'Adora' tomato has received high praise in the food industry, including the prestigious Superior Taste Award (and subsequent Crystal Award for multiple wins) from the International Taste Institute in Brussels.

  • Consumption: It is recommended to eat 'Adora' at room temperature to fully appreciate its flavour and aroma, often enjoyed simply sliced with a drizzle of olive oil.
